Keeping Your Apartment Cool

While not officially summer (yet), summer temperatures are right around the corner. And with summer weather comes warm apartments. If you don’t have an air conditioner, these summer temperatures can be uncomfortable but here are some tips for keeping your apartment cool through these summer months.

  1. Keep your blinds closed

The more sunlight coming into your unit, the warmer it’s going to be! Keep your blinds closed during the afternoon, typically the hottest part of the day. Even better? Invest in some blackout curtains to block out as much heat as possible.

  1. Make use of your fans

If you have a ceiling fan, make sure the blades are moving in the right direction! In the summer, make sure you ceiling fan is rotating counterclockwise. Portable fans are also very useful to cool you off but make sure the cooler air isn’t being wasted! Create a natural airflow by closing the doors of rooms you’re not using.

  1. Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs

Incandescent bulbs put out a lot of extra heat in your home – reports say they waste approx. 90% of their energy in the heat they emit. By switching to an energy-efficient bulb, you can decrease the amount of heat being put out as well as lower your electricity bill.
